lol, SLi is looking like a real pig to use :( i just bid on a pair of 7950gtx's to put in my sons pc (currently runs on a single 7900gt, which only runs crysis on low, & probably won't run crysis warhead at all) not looking foreward to setting it up now lol...

in fact, if you guys could give me your thoughts on weather or not this would be "better" than what he allready has, i'd be greatfull.

currently this is how i have my sons pc setup.

2.8ghz P4 (skt 775)
2gig ddr2
7900gt 512meg
450 watt psu

i'm inheriting this from my dad, who just upgraded to an AM2 system, ironicaly, i gave him this system about 3 years ago after i upgraded..

AMD skt939 3200xp (single core)
asus Sli mobo (cant remember the model, but it was around £100 when new & was the "deluxe")
2gig DDR 1
& am bidding on 2x matched 7950gtx's 512meg ea (£50, i thought it was worth a punt ;) )

i reckon the CPU's are probably fairly evenly matched, but will the DDR1 make a huge difference ? cant afford to build him a new system, & he'll inherit mine in a few months/half a year, so just looking for a quick fix to give him a boost :)

Hi Ogs

If it were me heres what i would do...

I would put the new cards in your sons current machine.

The two channel memory makes a big difference as opposed to single channel.

and it saves all the messing around with clean installs etc..

Just my opinion, wait for the AMD fanboy to reply LOL biggrin.gifbiggrin.gif

his current mobo isn't SLI, thats the only reason i'm considering taking a step back with the "older" skt 939 mobo (which has SLi) ;)

also, his current board only has 1 working ram slot, so it's just got a single stick of 2gig ddr2, whilst the older AMD mobo will be able to run 2 gig of matched pairs in dual channel mode (luckily i had some old ddr1 ram knocking around ;) )

yeah u re probably right mercy...though the best way to know is to try haha^^

all what i am sure is that this AMD cpu can just run ut2004(coupled to a 8600gt/agp)...i tryed it with ut3 and the installer gived me a warning on cpu limitation with this game...for the rest i wasnt so bad
sis previous cpu was the same as this intel and it wasnt a rocket for games...no huge diff between thoses two imho

deluxe mobos are nice u are right

on gfx for sure a sli is better than a sigle card and if i understood well the "intel" mobo dont allow sli?...if yes i think u really should bench that to have a clear idea!

srry i cant really tell as i presume all drivers have been updated since 3 yrs :p

i have grab infos(lol 3 yrs old news :p) here or there and:

- a p4 3.00ghz compared to a AMD 3200 2.0 ghz are on same performances....

-the AMD is faster for gaming and the intel for applications...(i havent found a comparaison vs a P4-2.8ghz cpu but vs a P4-3.00 so it dont change the "idea")

-if it was me i had definitivly go for the AMD + sli , not because i m in luv with AMD...but here just because it a better machine :).....+ the deluxe mobo allow more oc on proc :p

for the ram: the difference is discutable;

-ddr2 have lower voltage so is colder and less consumption

-latency delay is longer on ddr2 but as it allow x2 more transfer ddr2 is faster for the transfer of big sized datas..... but slower for "little" transfers

-"tampon " memory have enlarge from 2gb(ddr) to 4 gb(ddr2)....and 8 for ddr3

so dunno what kind of application u plane to use but for brand new games the ram will not be "comfortable" but for quite all games it should work ;)

Got that pc of my dad today, liberated a hard drive from my pc to use in it, then put connors 7900gtx in it, & did a clean install of XP.

imediately i noticed it was quit a lot faster, which surprised me as i thought they would be fairly similar, & connors old system had a fresh install about a month ago, so i know it wasn't jammed up or anything.

3dmark from his old system = 3880

& the new system = 5718 !!!!!!

a BIG difference.. & i have no idea why, all i can think of is that whilst the skt 939 cpu is old, but it is a 64bit cpu, whilst the p4 is an old crappy p4 (never liked the p4's tbh..

if it gets to 7000 in sli i'll be more than happy

7900gt or gtx ??

in yer first post u told a sli of 7950gtx and a 7900gt...

and in yer last post u told 7900gtx....typing mistake?

both use the g71 but freq is higher on the gtx and mem is bigga(gt: 256 to gtx:512)

the 7950gtx is just an overclooked 7900gtx but i dunno why i always though it was a gfx" special lappy"... :p

the 7900 came in both 256 & 512, my first card was a 512meg gt, but got replaced via RMD for a 512meg GTX.

no m8, my first 7900gt was a golden sample 512meg version (i wouldn't pay £350/425euro for a 256meg \gfx card even 3 years ago :p ) but that started displaying lots of artifact after about 3 months, but when i took it back to the shop (scan) it would perform flawlessly lol, after about 9 months, they finaly saw the flaw on there system, & as an apology for the hassle they replaced it with the better GTX version.. i still have the box for both cards :)

i only used the GTX in my pc for about 2 months, then got a 8800GTX so it's been cooking in my sons pc ever since lol :)

Back onto this pc i built for connor :)  i DID make a mistake with the 2x 7950gtx's,  i misread the description,  they are actually  2x 7950gt xm   not gtx...  so i've removed my bid for now, & will watch & see where they go,  as i think if i have a little patience i can get an 8800gt or gtx for about £50..

even as it is, the pc is playing crysis @ default setting on 1024X768  running nice & smooth..  i'm putting crysis warhead on as i type, which is harder to run, & also MW2 & Borderlands..  so i'll let you know if it plays them ok lol :)
